Thresholds
REBECCA WATSON
There is a hush before the door,
before the step, the leap, the more.
A place where breath is held in grace,
not here, not there, just almost place.
The child stands tall in growing shoes,
the pen hovers—what to choose?
A heart learns hope on worn-out floors,
hesitating near unopened doors.
Storms gather softly at the sill,
and still, you move, against your will.
Not by force, but something near
the shape of longing dressed as fear.
Thresholds don’t shout. They hum and wait,
between the now and change’s gate.
And when you cross (you always do),
you’ll find a wider sky and you.
Rebecca Watson is a writer and storyteller whose work blends humor, metaphor, and emotional honesty, often with a dark, horror-tinged edge. She is the creator of the Substack publications Stay Weird Press, where she explores everything from absurd short fiction to eerie, unsettling tales and reflections on identity, motherhood, and the strange poetry of everyday life. Her work moves between the chaotic and the profound, searching for beauty, fear, and meaning in unexpected places.
The debut issue of Sabr Tooth Tiger Magazine. 6×9 paperback, 134 pages.
