Ski Lift
JENNY WHIDDEN
no summit in sight seeping montana fog
wets my wide eyes, mists my open jaw.
winter’s heavy silence bears down on us
with finality. gnarled gray whitebarks
towering above our chairs swinging
i look out behind me: ridges endless. and know
we are mortals creaking toward the line’s end.
O Mountain, you are not my playground
i travel your snowy limbs with reverence
every run a pilgrimage, every turn a prayer:
may you long outlive us.
