Penitencia Pequeña

Penitencia Pequeña
David Raygoza

You can't not
forgive us for
eulogizing you
con el padre in hospice
instead of a chapel.
Welcoming God
into our mourning
would have felt dishonest—
weren't we the ones that
wanted you alive?
And so one last weekend
of hosting friends so
you're never alone.

You could
not forgive us,
and I'd understand too.
It makes some sort of sense that
the dead rest
and yet
dance
and sigh
and care
and it's not my eternal divine, but
to be sure I'll make
little ofrendas with the sunrise so
you're never alone.
