Our Magic Box

HANNA WEBSTER

Your first pair of earrings glinting against the wood like pinprick stars. You sweaty squeezed my hand as the needle pierced the putty of your flesh. The nail polish bottle shatters, Queen of Chaos staining our lives a deep liver. Three love letters with your looped handwriting bleeding through the back. A toy deer named Fern perched on your bedroom windowsill, plush gargoyle guarding our castle, our sacred life with satin matting the hardwood. Samia’s discography her twang bathing our wilted cells while we speed on the highway. My dirty panties on your altar. A butterfly’s peach-mottled wing, encased in resin gracing your neck. White and violet rosaries whose crosses keep unchaining. We find and reattach them, clinching the wire tight like our gaze at dinner unbroken. An AI rendition of a Campari poster you lost money on, because mistakes for the sake of devotion aren’t mistakes. Those green text bubbles from my family, aren’t you making a mistake. Don’t forget you love men. Your blood on a tissue. The bubblegum Realtree bikini, the first you felt comfortable wearing outside after hormones changed you. Tresses of our bleached hair. My tear-soaked tee after you spoke with your father, head bruising my chest, a kind of holy scar. Isn’t that everything, all we can say about love? A holy scar raised against the purified world.
