Litany of the Emerging Middle Class

LINDA BRYANT-DAVIS

Let my creditors be lazy.
May Urgent Notices pass me by.
Have the debt collectors lose
my address, my picture, my name.

Let my Credit Score be hale.
Let Gig Economy bless me.
May the Sheriff be corruptible;
may our buried treasure remain.

Make my pleasures small but frequent,
make my debit orders late.
Let my credit card go through,
make the rewards worth the wait.

Bestow upon us green lawns and high fences.
Give us this day our weekly latte.
May the bread be eaten while it is fresh;
may the discount veggies be crisp.

Send unto us Low Monthly Installments.
Keep us just below the next tax bracket.
Let our invoices be paid, let our children be unscathed.
May we find a god that cares. Amen.

Jané Dowd is a South African poet whose work moves between the sacred and the feral, the personal and the planetary. Her poems often explore the strange symbiosis between grief and wonder: how we survive the unbearable by naming it. Drawing on influences that range from mysticism and mythology to modern pop culture and the quiet absurdity of daily life, she writes at the intersection of philosophy, ecology, and the body.
