By the riverside
DAVID AGYEI-YEBOAH
Down by the riverside
I twitch to dip in
The river forms a channel
Endless twinkling wonders
I unsheathe and sink in
Away from unrealized dreams
Into transcendent glory
Into hope’s widened embrace
As the waters lap
Bubbles of ambivalence come up shore
My blood thickens
Tongue and lips soften
Language has failed me
Left me widowed of past mistakes
The failures drip in
Waters thumping hard
Down my throat
Into my eyes, nostrils, ears
Bringing me under
Stray bullets finding home
My arms flail
Breath shortens
The river is breaking into sea
And I’m the young man
Dwarfed between greatness and ruin
