Bedtime Prayer

TORI REGO

between alive and asleep
she comes quiet
feet suspended
moments above the floor
all shimmer all gold
she is mine we are alone

guardian angels cannot be shared

like old dolls blinking
out-of-fashion eyes

my angel does not require
reciprocity gives
direct to my curls
I am a little cup
made for her devotion

how sweet
the surrender
if it always came so
willing & wise

I grip her unsoiled
gown waiting
blessings fall
from her lips
in a generous glow
around my ears

I was once told love was not
a godly thing
